Structural & Infrastructure Intelligence Lab (Si² Lab)

About Si² Lab
The Structural & Infrastructure Intelligence Lab develops intelligent computational methods to support the analysis, management, and decision-making of civil structures, infrastructure systems, and the societies they serve.The lab’s research is organized around four interconnected thrusts:
i. Intelligent LLM-based agents that automate structural analysis and infrastructure management through interaction with engineering software and tools;
ii. System-level digital twins of infrastructure systems that integrate large-scale data into physics-based models;
iii. Life-cycle management that model deterioration, evaluate long-term safety, optimize inspections and maintenance strategies, with applications to bridges, ships, and transportation networks;
iv. Uncertainty quantification and optimization methods that support system reliability analysis, life-cycle analysis, community risk assessment , and life-cycle optimization.
Together, these efforts aim to create intelligent systems that both enhance the efficiency of human engineers and advance the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure and communities.
About PI
Dr. Minghui Cheng is an assistant professor jointly appointed by the Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering and School of Architecture at the University of Miami, with an affiliation with Climate Resilience Institute. Previously, he was a postdoctoral associate at Systems Engineering, Cornell University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Lehigh University in 2021 and his B.E. in Civil Engineering at Hunan University in 2016. His research focuses on the system digital twin of infrastructure systems, life-cycle management, and AI agents for structural analysis. He is on the International Scientific Committee of IALCCE 2023 and 2025, Organizing Committee of IABMAS 2026, and a member of the Task Group 1 of ASCE Tech Council On Life-Cycle Performance, Safety, Reliability.
